(Note: This seminar is held exclusively in French. All other Med-e-Tel conference sessions are in English.)

Workshop: Clinical Telemedicine Course
Chair: Jan von Overbeck, MEDGATE, Swiss Center for Telemedicine, Switzerland
Presented in cooperation with MEDGATE, Swiss Center for Telemedicine
This course will give the audience an insight into how clinical telemedicine works in the largest European telemedical center. After a short theoretical introduction the course will present genuine cases from our telemedicine outpatient department.
The concept of clinical telemedicine:
- Changes in Epidemiology: Patients consult earlier than in the past, and therefore at an earlier stage of disease. This makes the medical history the most important part of a consultation. A brief review will be given on this change, and how it allows us to make reliable medical diagnosis and triage.
- During a consultation we are able to solve between 50 and 60% of medical cases (defined as telecare ratio) without involving other medical providers. The consultations are problem-oriented and have an average duration of 8 minutes. We have developed some specialized clinics (Dermatology and Ophthalmology) to improve our triage and diagnosis skills.
Telemedicine Ground Round
- Real cases will be presented to illustrate the possibilities and potential risks of clinical telemedicine. In some cases we use pictures which the patients provide us. These pictures allow us to improve our diagnostic precision, and increase the proportion of cases in which we can make a concluding assessment.
- Child care represents an important part of our daily work (about 30%) and will be specifically treated in the course.
- Telebiomonitoring is used for diabetic as well as for heart failure patients. We will present how to use telemedical follow-ups and telebiomonitoring to improve the treatment compliance and outcome.
- For the ground round real encounters will be used in order to demonstrate the clinical telemedical process.
