Topics and thematical sessions of the overall Med-e-Tel 2013 program included:

  • A session on the Roles and Empowerment of Women in eHealth and Telemedicine which highlighted the crucial role of women in eHealth and Telemedicine and their unrecognized capacity as builders of alternative futures, based on characteristics such as an innate future orientation, capacity to mediate and to network at all levels, capacity to be social actors, to face natural catastrophes and human conflicts by creating solidarity among women. Based on the results of the WeHealth study, the session covered various perspectives of women in eHealth and Telemedicine, with a focus on their place and roles in this arena. The session was hosted by the Millennia2015 Women and eHealth (WeHealth) International Working Group with support from Connecting Nurses and Sanofi.

  • A session on Global eHealth Strategies, providing a policy dialogue on global eHealth as well as a look at developments and good practice from the field.

  • Session on eHealth Economics addressing the quest for evidence of clinical effectiveness and economic efficiency of telemedicine and eHealth. The presentations revealed the outcomes of ongoing trials or mainstream applications.

  • Various sessions on Mobile Health, Telecardiology, Telemonitoring and Home Care, eLearning, and more, demonstrating what exists or what is under development in telemedicine, eHealth and health ICT.

  • A track on Biomedical Informatics and Benefits of Free/Libre Open Source Software in Health Care (FLOSS-HC) with contributions from experienced users and developers of open source solutions and bioinformatics.

  • A b>Poster Session including posters from Belgium, Brazil, Hungary, India, Japan, Mongolia, Nigeria, Philippines, Poland, Portugal, South Africa, Sweden, Switzerland, UK and USA.

  • Sixth edition of the ISfTeH Student Videoconference Session, hosted by the ISfTeH Student Working Group. This Student session brings remote presentations of student projects and research in eHealth, through web-conferencing via the Blackboard (former Elluminate) platform. After a preliminary selection, 5 students were chosen to present the results of their telemedicine and eHealth projects and research.

  • A session on Telenursing - a growing application, offering possibilities to reduce the use of expensive healthcare services, to reduce hospital admissions or length of stay, to perform regular check-ups on patients with chronic conditions, to spread limited resources over a large population, and to increase access to nurse education. The Telenursing session was organized in cooperation with the Telenursing Working Group of the ISfTeH and the ICN (International Council of Nurses) Telenursing Network. Both groups are working closely together in order to advance the knowledge and use of telemedicine/telehealth technologies and eHealth among nurses worldwide.

  • Launch of the European Code of Practice for Telehealth Services, an initiative of the EU TeleSCoPE project, providing service standards and guidelines for telehealth services. By setting these service standards, TeleSCoPE intends to help establish relationships of trust between users, patients and providers and contribute to overall health and well-being. The standards also aim to provide a quality benchmark for service regulation.
