The h-Life project is part-funded by the European Commission’s IST programme with a EUR 4M budget over 2 years with 9 partners across Europe and in Israel.
h-Life will be presented at the Telemedicine Trade Fair by the project partners, together with another EU IST funded project, USBone (Ultrasound in Bone Fracture).

Medical image management is one of the hottest areas in the medical device market. With growth rates exceeding 35 percent in some European countries, the market environment is experiencing a high degree of dynamism and competition, reveals a new analysis from Frost & Sullivan.
"Growth is expected to be rather strong over the forecast period (2000-2004) as a result of the considerable efficiency gains and the trend towards digitalisation in hospitals," says the report’s author, healthcare research analyst, Axel Baccari. He continues: "The next few years will see a very substantial rise in the number of PACS installations as a result of the factors driving the market. The use of PACS in combination with web technology is certainly among the factors that have allowed this technology to be available to mainstream hospitals." The phenomenal growth is attributed to the levels of efficiency that PACS offers, the consequent savings that promote PACS installations and the presence of a large untapped market. In addition, the integration with RIS (radiology information systems) and HIS (hospital information systems) supports the idea of a 'digital' hospital. Other factors that drive the acceptance of PACS solutions are the ongoing development of the DICOM standard, the decreased hardware costs and the availability of advanced software.
The market is dominated by large multinationals that have product offerings in both the PACS and the teleradiology segments. Market concentration equals 67 percent, in a market which has experienced considerable evolution in recent years and has more than 28 participants. The principal companies in the European market are: Agfa, Kodak, GE Medical Systems, Siemens and Philips. Several of them, together with other market players in the field of PACS and related products and services will be exhibiting at the Telemedicine Trade Fair in Luxembourg. Another recently published Frost & Sullivan analysis reports on the European Telepathology Market. Telepathology, once viewed as a passing fad, is now regarded as an integral part of the promising future of telemedicine. Further inroads into the telecoms arena in conjunction with a greater acceptance from pathologists, are expected to promote strong growth in the embryonic European telepathology market.
Technological progress in the field is expected to drive the market for telepathology. In particular, information and communication technology (ICT) developments, virtual microscopy, and integration with hospital information systems (HIS), are likely to propel demand.
A challenge will be to identify a marketing strategy capable of convincing end-users that telepathology is not a substitute for conventional diagnostic procedures, but a real advancement in the world of pathology.
As competition intensifies in the European telepathology market, both microscope as well as software companies stand to gain. The former are expected to benefit from customer loyalty to their well-established brand names. The latter are likely to be in an advantageous position, since store and forward telepathology is likely to experience stronger growth than robotic telepathology.
With its high quality and potential benefits, the rapidly evolving field of telepathology is here to stay. It is very much part of a future scenario, where it will constitute a vital working tool for pathologists.
