The International Association of Homes and Services for the Ageing (IAHSA - www.iahsa.net) will conduct a conference session about 'The Need for User and Provider Involvement in the Development of Ageing Services Technologies' at Med-e-Tel 2007. The session will investigate how technology acts as a condition and driver for economic participation of senior citizens and will draw lessons from European comparative studies. Furthermore, the In-HAM living labs (Innovationcenter in Housing for Adapted Movement) will be highlighted. These labs are designed to help demonstrate, test and design specific building and living technology in order to strive for a maximal independence for elderly persons or persons with disabilities. And representatives of the American Center for Ageing Services Technologies (CAST) will discuss how emerging technologies can improve the ageing experience. Additional topics and details of the session will be announced short! ly.
IAHSA is an international, not-for-profit educational and charitable organization with multi-national composition, both in governance and membership. IAHSA members are from over 30 countries and include leaders in long-term care, senior housing, business and government as well as professionals interested in the international arena of ageing services.

In addition to the above mentioned IAHSA session at Med-e-Tel and a focus on services and technology for the elderly, the program will feature an extensive and diverse range of presentations and workshops. Here is a preview of some of the organizations and topics you can expect to meet and hear about at Med-e-Tel 2007:
* Opening keynote presentations will be provided by Mark Blatt (Director Global Healthcare Strategies, Intel), Yunkap Kwankam, (eHealth Coordinator, World Health Organization), Michael Nerlich (President, International Society for Telemedicine & eHealth), Giuseppe Tritto (Acting President, World Academy of Biomedical Technologies). Several other contributions to the Opening Session are under consideration.
* The World Academy of Biomedical Technologies (WABT/UATI-ICET/UNESCO) together with a leading IT and technology solution provider will host a session which covers their interdisciplinary approach to biomedical technology development.
* A classic at Med-e-Tel: members of the International Society for Telemedicine & eHealth (ISfTeH) will present and discuss their national and international experiences in the fields of national health IT programs, telemedicine projects, cross-border cooperation, and technological advancements.
* The Telecare Specialist Task Force of the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) will hold a workshop on 'User Experience Guidelines for Telecare Services'.
* The steering committee of a Belgian home healthcare automation/telecare project will hold a meeting during Med-e-Tel. The project aims to generate innovative solutions by bringing together users (carers, patients, disabled, elderly) and solution providers (industry, researchers).
* The announced 'funding opportunities' round table (mentioned in a previous Med-e-Tel newsletter) will be held under the theme of 'Maximizing the Potential of eHealth in the Developing World - A Proposal for Promoting Coordinated Action' and will primarily focus on needs and opportunities in Africa, but will obviously have relevance for other regions as well. Chaired by Rays of Hope Foundation and HealthSpan International, with support from the World Health Organization, the round table will bring together users, funders and implementors/integrators and promote inter-sector understanding of respective points of view, and highlight collaboration opportunities all with the objective of encouraging collective, efficient progress to achievement of common ehealth goals.
* A conference session on diabetes will look at how telecare and telemedicine technologies can provide efficient and effective solutions for monitoring and management of this chronic condition. Additional sessions on in-home and mobile monitoring and chronic disease management (for CHF, COPD, Asthma, ...) will also be part of the program.
* Together with UC Davis School of Medicine (California, USA) and several other international pediatric specialists, a pediatric telehealth symposium will look at how telemedicine can be used to provide a variety of specialty consultations, will provide planning, management, and financial data, and will look at ways to set up sustainable pediatric telehealth programs.
* A regional (Be-Lux) seminar, coordinated by the Luxembourg CRP-Santi, will focus on how healthcare performance and quality can be improved with the use of new IT tools. Leading healthcare providers and policy makers from the region, together with leading IT and technology companies and software developers will provide market and policy updates and present successful business cases.
